look up as you walk away

Text included in my new book, once, you were an island :

These are the things we know to be true.
Turn around. What he just said is intended for you.

“she starting asking about seeing the stars” he said. “something that sounded like, how far or which way or where? she was holding some sort of folded stained map with hand drawn things like a tree, arrows towards the top of the page, circles to the left. i couldn’t really make out what it was describing. She just kept pointing to the tree….”

Why did he stop talking so abruptly?
Look up as you walk away. But, don’t go too far.

“between here and there is long and lonely”  he said. “ if you don’t look for it, you’ll probably miss it.”

Be quiet, still.

“it was about three or four in the morning, you know, the small hours” he said. “all was kind of cockeyed and sleepy. she was drudging up that hill in the snow in twelve degrees, thigh high boots. who was following who? i hope the moon was listening.”

Get closer as it thaws.

“once, you were an island” he said.
